When you think of skin and facial treatments for those under 30, one of the last procedures you would imagine to be popular would be Botox®; however, you would be dead wrong! A growing number of men and women in their early to mid 20’s are now considering and undergoing the procedure as a preventative measure to stop pesky wrinkles from forming in the first place.
Why you should consider preventative Botox®
It is especially helpful when you live in a sunny part of the country, such as Florida, to take care of your skin with sunblock and a regimented skin care routine to help fight wrinkles and lines. But there is only so much you can do to truly prevent wrinkles that are caused by facial muscle movements.
Fine lines and wrinkles can develop over a period of time due to a weakening of the skin that creases in the same area of the face regularly. Laughter or “smile lines”, pursing of the lips, crow’s feet around the eyes or continually scrunching your forehead can all add small, fine lines which will eventually get deeper with age when the skin eventually begins to lose its elasticity.
Injecting Botox® into these areas causes the muscle to relax, preventing them from allowing the skin in these areas to fold which helps to prevent any further wrinkling. Not only does it affect muscle movement, the procedure doubles as a way of creating a smooth appearance to the skin because the muscle movement has been restricted.
It makes sense that if you are worried about lines and wrinkles from forming early on, you could prevent this with this very simple procedure.
So what is the difference between Botox® and preventative Botox®?
The difference between Botox® and preventative Botox® has to do with muscle movement. Although it works in a similar way, the primary goal is not the treatment of wrinkles or fine lines; it is a proven way of retraining the facial muscles not to move which prohibits the lines from developing, to begin with.
Without Botox® treatment, the muscles can pull the skin folds in directions which actively cause lines and wrinkles. The application of Botox® allows the muscles movement to pull in a different direction causing muscles and skin to age much more evenly. By retraining the muscles, you can break the habit of muscle overexpression (actions like frowning or lip pursing) which can reduce lines and wrinkles for longer.
